Wow i just wanted to drop a line quickly and say that i know EXACTLY what your going thru Ethan altho my injury hit me on the climb u

Ive seen ur name thrown around in the rag mags climbing v12's a shiz and was on my way up, i thought, of being a dirt bag climber living the chalky life out of the back of my expidition when I tore my glenoid labrum from the 2 oclock to the 5 o clock position... Im still dealing with this injury currently and had a corticoid steriod shot yesterday ( 9/23/09, funny this is i thought i would be sending v6-7 by my 23rd birthday which is tomorrow...hahah life

I always thought the "pro's" so to say never got hurt... sharma ever tore a shoulder ?

I just wanted you to know that even us v3'ers who have dreams of sending back, making it to those dosage films get hurt. Im in the midst of wanting to scream bc all i want to do is climb... Surgery is not an option for myself at this point, still have 6-8more weeks of PT but i wanted to share with you something another climber told me

Dont stop...

Like you said, your a Lifer, I believe myself to be one to, damn this addicition it is bitter sweet

Find those climbs that fullfil you physically and mentally and you will find that spiritual fullfillment

Good Luck mate

see u on a v4 hopefully :O)

Yao -

Shoulders are a bi-atch to heal up - the joint is super-complex, and its really difficult to know exactly what's wrong with it.

I'm about the same age as you, climbed mostly bouldering, sport, and worked as a routesetter for several year (been climbing for 12 years) and had some shoulder problems in the past couple.

One was a traumatic injury that likely resulted in a labral tear that I got over without surgery, but took about a year and required constant attention.

The other was a less-traumatic injury that resulted in a labral tear on the other side, which did require surgery after a year of rehab - 3 months out from it now and just got started on the hangboard again.

Reading an MRI can be really interpretive, so just be careful about it.

email me if you have any questions -

But good luck. I know the feeling of being a lifer in this, so just think - cutting even a year off to climb 20, 30 more isn't so bad (not saying you'll only climb another 20 years...but going 20 years without any layoff would be uncanny).

Ethan,

Sorry to hear about your shoulder man!! I can say from experience they are no fun at all! I recently (well about 13 months ago) hurt my shoulder in a dumb move on my part trying to demonstrate how to use the ab wheel very quickly. I remember hearing it make a rather nasty sound but it didn't hurt that bad and i continued to lift that day in the gym. this was feb. i continued to climb and lift and over about three weeks i went to the doc. first doc says its bursitis and sends me home. i continue to climb but lifting now hurts too much. three more weeks and i see the second doc...MRI done and shows calcific tendonitis but no tear...three more weeks and i can't climb without pain...third doc says do phys. ther. for 4 weeks...still hurts so he goes in to just scope it out and see if anything was wrong. well i had a near full thickness tear of the rotator (front side near where the bicep connects) and i had a small SLAP tear :( it took six months from surgery but i was able to begin training again and 8 months post surgery i am nearly back to where i was. basically MRI's can be very very missleading in shoulders and it may be worth getting second or third opinions....there are many who say not to have surgery and there are many who say surgery is the way to go...

good luck with the shoulder and i hope that it isn't that bad but i will say one thing, i was ALWAYS able to move my arm through full range of motion and was able to handle the "strength" tests the docs do for a tear so they never suspected anything wrong...

Ethan,

Not sure if you remember me. I was the short guy working in on the cobra one day up in Squamish last summer. Anyhow, your current shoulder conundrum caught my eye.

When I was 19 (just before beginning to climb) I made a posterior tear in my glenoid labrum while lifting weights improperly. I floated around the Group Health/Kaiser system for six years in physical therapy. To make a long drawn out story short: I eventually got fed up with injury relaps, had the MRI, found out that I didn't have a rotator cuff muscle injury, had surgery, recovered, and am now climbing my hardest ever. It amazes me that I lived with a torn shoulder for so long without uncovering the truth of my condition.
